An overview on May Day throughout Europe

BERLIN, GERMANY: Riot police clash with left-wing protesters during a march in the annual Revolutionaerer 1. Mai (Revolutionary May 1st) demonstration in the Kreuzberg district on May Day on May 1, 2014 in Berlin, Germany. Several thousand protesters took part in the march that in years past has been plagued by violent clashes between marchers and police.

HAMBURG, GERMANY: Left-wing activists from across Germany gathered in Hamburg today to take part in the demonstrations as a sign of solidarity with the residents of the Rote Flora squat and leftist cultural center. A real estate developer, who has owned the property since 2001, is seeking to rebuild the former theater into a six-storey building with a concert hall, though the Rote Flora occupants have responded with strong and sometimes violent opposition.

BARCELONA, SPAIN: Alternative 1 May demonstration called by unions and minority groups, has ended in damage to street furniture on its way through the ride Picasso and his arrival in front of the Government Office , the Marques Avenue Argentera . Several masked protesters have burned and shattered glass containers of various properties , including businesses and banks. The march was dispersed. The Police have reported the arrest of four individuals.

BILBAO, EUSKADI: Unrest in Bilbao after the demonstrations. A group of hooded has caused havoc in several stores and bank branches of the old town of Bilbao, as recorded by Efe, at the end of the May Day demonstrations.

The events have occurred around 14.00 hours when the hooded, using paint cans and clubs, attacked the premises, leaving painted as “exploited Work”, have informed the news agency Security Department sources.

PARIS, FRANCE: Around 210,000 people have taken to the streets of France, including 65,000 in Paris, according to the leadership of the General Confederation of Labor trade union, which organized the march. Demonstrators marched from Paris’ Place de la Nation to Place de la Bastille, demanding that the government fight unemployment and prevent the decrease of salaries.“Unite against government austerity measures,” placards read. Another rally was organized by France’s Democratic Confederation of Labour at Place de la Bataille-de-Stalingrad in Paris and called on the EU to take measures to battle unemployment. Union leaders and 200 activists then laid wreaths at the Communards’ Wall in Père-Lazesh.

 

COPENHAGEN, DENMARK: Danish protesters lashed out on the government’s policy during the May Day rally in Copenhagen’s Felledparken, saying it’s too far right and doesn’t support local workers. However, some demonstrators supported Prime Minister of Denmark Helle Thorning-Schmidt’s speech at the rally, who said that Denmark has “returned to the right track.” Police said there were some scuffles between the two side

BELGRADE, SERBIA: International Labor Day was celebrated in Serbia with worker’s protests against the government’s announced austerity measures. Several thousand workers gathered at the Nikola Pasic Square in Belgrade, where the union leaders told them they will have to oppose to the austerity measures and privatization that were announced by the newly elected government of Serbia.

ATHENS, GREECE: In Greece, more than 15,000 people attended peaceful rallies in central Athens to protest austerity measures in the crisis-hit country. Greece’s largest trade union, GSEE, said the measures imposed in return for a bailout four years ago had “destroyed 100 years of effort” to establish labor rights. The union has organized 37 general strikes since the introduction of the austerity measures, which have severely cut incomes and benefits.
